How many children should choose a drug free lifestyle, to make any program worthwhile? How can we encourage our youth to make a positive choice and stay away from gateway drugs?
The Reuter's Report, June 24, 2002, states, "A new study says that drug-prevention programs would be more effective if they started in elementary schools rather than middle schools... students who began using alcohol, cigarettes or marijuana in elementary school were five times more likely to be using these substances when they were in middle school compared with their peers". (4) Dr. Nance Wilson, lead author of the study by the University of California School of Public Health in Berkeley, California said, "That such early use is associated with greatly increased odds of later use, when the children are in middle school, suggests that early prevention programs are of great importance”. (5) The Robert Wood Foundation indicated that, "after 20 years of researching addiction prevention, the programs that work the best are programs that combine a solid based school program with active learning experience".
